Internet Fraud Criminal Defense Lawyer
Internet fraud is an ever-increasing form of criminal offense. With more and more companies and individuals conducting business transactions over the internet, fraudulent solicitations and transactions using chat rooms, websites, email, message boards, blogs, and more, have become widespread. Government agencies to prevent such crimes have been created, such as the Internet Fraud Complaint Center, a division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation designed to track internet fraud and catch its offenders.
Types of internet fraud
According to a recent investigation of 2007 statistics by the FBI, internet auction fraud is the most commonly abused, comprising 44.9% of internet fraud cases. Non-delivered merchandise or payment is second at 19%, and other prevalent forms of internet fraud include check fraud, credit/debit card fraud, phishing, and others.
In internet auction fraud, a dishonest seller may advertise an item at a very low price and will then deliver a picture of the item instead of the item itself or will fail to deliver the item altogether. Other sellers may attain wire transfer or credit card information to complete a transaction and will charge items the buyer never asked for and will not deliver said items.
Fraudulent business opportunities or work-at-home schemes, click or SEO (Search Engine Optimization) fraud and phishing are additional acts classified as internet fraud. Phishing is the attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information (usernames and passwords, or credit card information) by pretending to be a trustworthy organization. For example, an individual phishing for information may pose as a major bank and send out a mass email stating that the recipient must re-enter their username and password to reactivate their online banking account. When, of course, the recipient’s account had never been deactivated in the first place.
